What Is a Breathe Up?

A breathe up is the relaxation and breathing routine you perform before a freedive. It calms your heart rate, saturates your blood with oxygen, and puts your body into a relaxed state that makes your dive safer and more enjoyable.

Why It Matters

Rushing into a dive without proper preparation leads to higher oxygen consumption, faster urge to breathe, and shorter bottom time. A structured breathe up gives your body the signal that everything is calm and safe, which helps you conserve oxygen naturally.

How This Timer Works

1

Relax Phase (2 minutes)

Lie still or float face down. Breathe naturally and let go of any tension in your body. Focus on relaxing your shoulders, jaw, and hands.

2

Breathe Up Phase (2 minutes)

Follow the guided pattern: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 2 seconds, exhale for 6 seconds. This rhythm activates your parasympathetic nervous system and lowers your heart rate.

3

Final Breath (30 seconds)

Take two to three deep, full breaths. On the last one, fill your lungs completely from belly to chest. This is your final breath before the dive.

Tips for Better Results

  • Practice on land before using this in the water
  • Never hyperventilate (fast, deep breaths) before a dive
  • Keep your exhale longer than your inhale to trigger relaxation
  • If you feel dizzy or lightheaded, return to normal breathing
  • Always dive with a buddy and never alone
